08/23/2005: "i'm not dead yet...i want to go for a walk."

ok, previously we covered one of the Cardinal Rules of Poker™. in case you forgot, never limp aces. ok that's one. here is a couple of more - after the jump!

~~~~
it is not by accident that in Barry Greenstein's book Ace on the River he covers all of the soft skills about poker prior to actually getting to any hands and theory. why? well, i can only posit that Barry feels that poker is more about the person, their personality, and their decisons than the actual cards. i couldn't agree more.
i am sure you have heard these before, but i am going to give some proof as to why they are in the Cardinal Rules of Poker™. for your sake, i recommend reading these and taking them to heart; no need in repeating my mistakes. seriously.
firstly, never play when tired. if you set a time to quit and that time comes, regardless of your chip stack, or your 'gut' telling you to stay just a little longer, or how soft the table is, or that all your buddies will say your whipped, etc - go ahead and quit the game.
secondly, if you are tilting, get up, leave the table/monitor and don't come back until you are untilted.
regarding the first: i usually set a time for how long (and how much dollar-wise) i am going to gamble. i think it is wise to have pre-set limits. this way, regardless of (here's that word again) outcomes you will have already made a decision. i almost always do this. last night, i cheated and it cost me. at 12AM told myself i was going to play till 12:30AM and then go decompress and sleep. at 12:30, though tired and down $73.40, i bumped quitting until 1AM. at 12:46AM i get my ass handed to me. at 12:54 Tilty McLose-a-Lot calls.
which brings us to rule the second: when tilting, stop playing. go use the bathroom, get a drink, do a shot, fly a kite, but just go. now this rule is harder to live by, b/c it supposes that you will recognize yourself tilting. that is a learned skill, boys and girls. i suggest thinking of some tells you have seen on others that give away when they are tilting. go ahead and write those down, post them on your desk, monitor, or your head and then watch for them as you play. mine last night? i actually remember thinking, "ok, i'll add my last $40 and then all i need to do is double through and i can break even." holy crap - what the hell was wrong with me. one word: T I L T.
so what happened? i was playing the $2/$4 NLHE table on Full Tilt. though i have never played these stakes online, since playing the $6/$6 NLHE live at Northside i have become accustomed to $1K swings. max buy-in is $400 and the table avg was $300, so i bought in for $300. i started playing around 9PM and by 12:30AM i was down about $70. no biggie, i can handle that. then this hand happens and i literally get my ass handed to me:
as you can see, i didn't raise (mistake #1) and i failed to even think that a set could be out there (mistake #2.) both of these came about b/c i ignored the Cardinal Rule of Poker™ - stop playing when you are tired. i was past the time that i told myself i would stop, i had been up for about 22 hours straight, and i should have heeded my body's call for rest. i blame breaking this Cardinal Rule of Poker™ on these two errors.
well, here comes Cardinal Rules of Poker™ violation #2 - i then add $40, thinking that i can "get even" by doubling through. typing this now makes me want to slap the shit out of myself. so i fold exactly 8 hands and then i do this:
i didn't even have the nut-flush draw. fucking pathetic. i would like to thank Mr. Tilty McTilt for jamming my boys up into my esophagus. i lay awake from 1AM to 3AM pondering my existence. seriously. i got up at 4:30 to let the dogs out and 5:30 for work. how ya' like me now, negative expectation and variance?
so why can i talk about this at all? doesn't this make me look like a huge fool, abjectly ignorant of how to play the game, and obviously a rider of the short yellow bus during my parochial years? yes to all three. but i can talk about it b/c it's cathartic and i am hoping through admission and embarrassment, i can heal myself. or at least learn. maybe.
silver lining time!!
