10/20/2005: "mr. blue sky is living here today"

so the Astros won. exciting, no?

well, yes and no....

~~~~
first off, when it looked like the Astros were going to win the NLCS, a pang of apprehension went through my body. my wife calls me a pessimist; i merely think i am a realist. you say tomato....
anyway, my first thought was, with the Astros winning the NLCS and making the World Series for the first time in club history, this would provide our sad-sack owner ammunition to continue saying that he "seeks excellence" with the club. i don't hide my apathy for Drayton McLane. i think he runs the Astros the way he learned business from his Wal-mart millions, always on the cheap and rolling back prices.
in a lot of ways, Drayton's decisions and the Astros success in '05 can be related to poker (can't everything be related to poker?) remember, in poker you should live by "decisions not outcomes" and make an effort to always act properly when faced with a decision. just because you call a raise and re-raise in front of you with the 7-2o and flop 7-7-2 doesn't mean your play was correct; more than likely you lucked out. in the same vein, just because the Astros are doing something that they haven't done in 44 years of organizational history doesn't mean that letting Jeff Kent and Carlos Beltran go were the right decisions. probably just a lot of luck considering our results.
so, my first concern when the Astros looked poised for a win was that Drayton is going to toot his own horn and break his arm patting himself on the back. the reality is, he is just a luckbox. that's reality kids, not pessimism.
secondly, when i considered the Astros going to the WS, i wasn't happy that it is probably going to cost me a cool $1K to see one of the games...and yeah, i am pretty much going to have to see a game. that is a blessing and a curse. eBay here i come.
so, yeah i am excited, but hesitant. please don't read that they wrong way - i am happy that i am finally getting to see the Astros in a World Series. i am not one of those people who bets against their team b/c he's getting the right odds - i do lead with my heart. but i did have my heart set on getting an owner who would spend some money....
Well, you know, if the boys completely fall apart and get swept, there may be a chance of getting a new owner.
However, even a passing fan like me can see that isn't going to happen. I mean, I can't see them blowing up like *that*.
Besides, what would you rather have: A new owner or a ring? - well, a ring for someone else.
Either way, it'll be good for downtown's continuing development.
