02/01/2008: what a long, strange trip it's been

well, well, well - look what the cat dragged in.

i took the whole month of Jan off; wasn't planning to, but we had puppies mid-month and they were nine days early, so it has altered my life a little. in related puppy news, they opened their eyes yesterday and my wife is in love. at some point i will try to put up some pics. they are very cute. 1/2 shih-tzu and 1/2 brussels griffon, so we are calling them chiffons. yes, they were planned (i know with 6 dogs you would think we wouldn't plan any more!) both boys. we had planned to name them Romulus and Remus, but i didn't like the fact that IRL Romulus killed his brother. so we fell back to more spiritual realm and named them Buddha and Bodhisattva. next up for them: walking and then weaning. woot!

haven't been playing a ton of poker and yet i did manage to go roughly -$1K this month. nice! truth be told, almost half of that was one tourney, the 4th Annual All In For ALS. buy-in was $350 and rebuys were $60. i got lucky and managed to only need the add-on. how? tradition (i have played in all four years of these) states that all players should go "all-in for ALS" on the first hand - blind! since it is a rebuy, charity, and tax deductible, many do. i always do. this year i got a pretty nitty starting table and only 5 of us did. before we flipped i apologized to everyone for the suckout that was coming and then i showed them 3-5 hearts. you know it was good. river flush beat a out flopped set of 6s and i was up T40K in the first hand. nice! i proceeded to smack the bejesus out of my starting table, even though i only managed one pair, 9s, and AK twice. the rest was all steals. i chipped up to about T75K by break and then our table broke. FMITGA. i managed to get moved to the chip leaders table and of course, after about an hour of him doing what i thought was stealing, i fought back with KQ...and he gimped me with AA. i suck. but i had fun and the money went to something close to my heart. in side news, the founder of the tourney, Stuart Nichols used to work with my dad for about 10 years at Exxon. Stuart got ALS four years ago and it hurts to watch his deterioration each year. he is a great guy and my dad said he was always a great guy to work with. my heart goes out to him and his family.

oh yeah, this tourney generally draws about 400 players. this year Dimitri "i blow a big stack" Nobles showed up, as well as return players Ayaz Mahmood and John Bonetti showed up. good times. i went out about 50th. again, sucks. highest i have finished was in the low 30s.

also this month i played some online tourneys for about $200. I also dropped the entire wad i won in this tourney playing $.50/$1 heads-up. all to one guy pretty much in one sitting. so sick. i redeemed myself by winning two full buy-ins back earlier this week against some really weak players.

so all in all, not a great month of tourney poker for me. some beats, some variance, but mostly some shitty poker playing. example? last night in the FTP 50/50 i tried to draw to the flush against a new, big stack player at our table. he had a set of threes (he was PFR!) dunno why i didn't fold. i was roughly avg in chip stack and there were billions of better places to make moves. i just sucked it up. par for the course.

since it is now February, i actually found my New Year's Resolutions. i thought i lost them when i blew away my work laptop, but surprise surprise i saved them to my old Treo before that happened. unfortunately my Treo is battery dead, so still no list. but lets be honest: i have failed at many of what i wanted to do, such as: (1) only eating lunch out once a week, (2) working out three times a week, (3) actually poker study 1 hour/week, etc. oh well. so is life. i'll try to rescue them and post them later. no promises. i suck.

i did manage to already make a live show this year, unfortunately it was after the ALS tourney, so i was so shitfaced i don't even remember what rockabilly band it was. usual stuff for The Continental Club. this was a resolution too: avg one live show a month. my resolutions said nothing about sobriety! heh.

well, i am sure there is more, but i am not feeling it. so happy Friday to ya!
